Beeswax is a substance made by bees to build honeycombs. It has a long history of use in skin care, dating back to Ancient Egypt. Even the first cosmetic cream contained beeswax! This is owing to its many different properties that benefit the skin, some of which we’ll discuss.
Research shows that beeswax has therapeutic properties due to its composition. It contains chrysin, a compound with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties, as mentioned by Gorecka et al. (2020). But that’s not all.
Al-Waili et al. (2005) found that honey, olive oil, and beeswax are effective in treating psoriasis, eczema, fungal skin infections, and diaper dermatitis. Moreover, according to Fratini et al. (2016), beeswax can help heal bruises, burns, and inflammation.
But, how do all these properties benefit the skin?
Kasparaviciene et coll. (2016) mentioned the components of beeswax and its uses. Companies use it as an emulsifying agent, a stiffener for cosmetics, and a component that increases elasticity, plasticity, and skin adhesiveness. It is also used as a base for lipsticks and creams.
Beeswax also contains sterols, which lubricate and soften the skin while reducing its water loss. Aside from the properties mentioned earlier, it contains beta-carotene, which converts into the antioxidant vitamin A that protects the skin from aging.
