Contact dermatitis, one of the most common skin disorders, occurs when a person’s skin comes into direct contact with an irritant or allergen, leading to an inflammation of the skin. This allergic reaction presents itself as a rash that is often itchy and uncomfortable.

There are two primary types of contact dermatitis: the allergic and irritant types. The allergic type occurs when the body’s immune system reacts to a harmless substance in the environment, treating it as a threat. The irritant type, however, occurs when a chemical or physical agent irritates the skin.

Recognizing the symptoms

This condition typically leads to a red, itchy rash which can develop quickly following exposure to an allergen or irritant. Other symptoms may include swelling, burning, blisters, dry, cracked, and scaly skin. The rash is usually confined to the site of contact with the irritant or allergen.

Treatment and management

Treatment and management of contact dermatitis generally involves avoiding the allergen or irritant, topical creams or ointments, and oral medications.
