Menstrual cramps are a common occurrence that can be painful and can disrupt workflow. It happens when the muscles of the womb contract to shed the inner lining during monthly periods. This may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for some. Those who experience painful menstrual cramps miss classes or work during the days of their period. The good news is, there are many ways to relieve the pain caused by this condition.
Some find relief from menstrual cramps by taking over-the-counter pain relievers. The NSAIDs ibuprofen and naproxen are effective in relieving menstrual pain (IQWiG, 2006). But these have side effects that include stomach-related problems. Others also find relief by using birth control pills, but these increase the risk of blood clots. The application of warmth also helps with the pain.
Alternatively, essential oils are traditionally used as pain relievers for menstrual cramps. Lavender essential oil, for example, can help to relieve this pain and discomfort. Essential oils can also reduce inflammation and promote relaxation.
A study by Nikjou et coll. (2016) shows that lavender has a significant effect on dysmenorrhea caused by menstrual cramps. Lavender contains linalool and linalyl acetate, which have activities against spasms (Auld & Sinha, 2006). Studies also show that lavender can treat other problems like infertility, anxiety, stress, infection, and fever (Seo, 2009; Lehrner et al., 2005).
