Lyme disease is an infectious disease that is alarmingly prevalent globally. The bacterial species Borrelia burgdorferi causes this disease, and it infects humans via tick bites. Let’s have a brief overview of this disease.
Lyme disease is not transmitted from person to person. Instead, it is a vector-borne disease transmitted primarily through the bite of the infected black-legged tick, also called deer tick. Note that not all ticks carry the causative bacteria.
Deer ticks often dwell in grassy, heavily wooded areas where the creatures they feed on (usually deer) live. Humans get the disease when they visit these areas and get bites from an infected deer tick.
